Ellington Park has been nominated for an award to be recognised as the UK’s Best Park.
Ellington Park, with its historic bandstand, is a green oasis in the heart of Ramsgate. Once neglected, a dedicated group of local residents and park users have introduced new benches and picnic tables, a table tennis table, a wildlife garden, and transformed tree stumps into 3D works of art. It also hosts events such as the May Fayre and the Music Fest in September.
Craig Mackinlay says, “Throughout the year, the park is at the heart of our community. Recent improvements by volunteers have been warmly welcomed, and I hope the recent lottery fund grant application will be successful to bring further improvements.”
The park is one of 121 nominated in a public vote being run by a charity called Fields In Trust. Founded 90 years ago, Fields In Trust seeks to ensure that everyone – young or old, able or disabled and wherever they live – should have access to free, local outdoor space for sport, play and recreation. The charity protects almost 2,500 outdoor recreational sites from development.
