Laura Sandys this week donned a pair of vision impairing glasses to mark World Sight Day. The MP for South Thanet joined members of the Thanet Lions Club and Kent Association for the Blind at Westwood Cross to take part in challenges aimed at raising awareness of preventable blindness and promoting a better understanding of the challenges faced by those with vision impairment.
Laura said of the event “This superb annual challenge is a great way to show people what it is really like to have a sight problem. In so many parts of the world people are still losing their sight due to conditions which we know how to treat. In the UK, there are lots of things that we can do to support and make life easier for the blind and visually impaired.
“It is an honour to take part in this important day and support the Thanet Lions in helping to raise awareness of just how challenging it can be for those who are visually impaired to navigate.”
World Sight Day aims to draw attention to the fact that 80% that of the world’s blindness and visual impairment could be prevented or cured with proper treatment.
